Job Title: Crane Operator/Mechanic


Reports To:Crane Superintendent, Maintenance Superintendent

FLSA Status:Non-Exempt

Salary:$28.846/hr. To $31.25/hr., Depending on Qualifications

Summary:To operate in a safe and responsible manner and perform routine maintenance on 140 ton Liebherr and the 220 ton American Cranes engaged in lifting, transporting and loading/unloading commodities such as military cargo, bulk steel, bulk grain and forest products.

Essential Job Functions:Operates and maintains both the 140 ton Liebherr and 220 ton American Mobile Cranes.Performs routine maintenance, painting and repairs on cranes and hoisting mechanism.Assist to rerig cranes to lift and move equipment or commodities according to weight and size.As directed, gives directions to overhead crane operator hoisting heavy lifts and moving loads to ensure safety to workers and material handled.Manipulates or depresses crane controls such as pedals, levers and buttons, to regulate speed and direction of crane and hoist movement.

Other Job Functions:As directed by Maintenance Superintendent, operates bushhog tractor, backhoe and sweeper when needed.Be available to perform fabricating, burning or welding when needed.Perform routine maintenance and repairs on other port equipment and machines.Clean and wash facilities, sheds, aprons, etc., as directed.

EQUIPMENT USED: Crane Operator assigned truck, and other port equipment as assigned.


Education & Experience:High school diploma/GED or five (5) years related crane experience and must become certified to operate all cranes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Effective verbal and written communications skills; working knowledge of a variety of transportation-related statistical reports; strong interpersonal skills in order to interact and cooperate with co-workers and deal effectively with the general public and port customers; leadership ability; problem solving skills.

Must have, or be able to obtain, Transportation Worker Identification Credentials (TWIC).Must have valid Texas Drivers License with good driving record.

WORK SITUATIONS/DEMANDS/EFFORT:Work requires organizing; prioritizing; attention to detail; working as part of a group; flexibility in order to perform a variety of duties; performing routine, repetitive duties; working in a stressful environment.Must be available to work 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and in performance of after hours and weekend duties with other crane operators; be available (on call via cell phone) on a 24 hour basis, as necessary to meet job demands; and be available to project interest of the port at civic and social functions whenever necessary and after working hours.

WORKING CONDITIONS:Work is performed in a climate controlled maintenance facility and outside in field locations.Worker is subject to adverse weather and environmental conditions, including temperature extremes, humidity, and precipitation; physical hazards from moving machinery, and traffic; safety hazards and adverse atmospheric conditions, dust and odors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:A clear and keen sense of alertness, the ability to bend, stoop, climb and lift to get to operating stations.Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.Specific vision abilities required, include good far vision (20/20 or correctable to 20/20). Ability to work from heights and withstand elements of heat and cold.
